Chine collé for the beginner and the master.
1 session, Saturday
December 3, 12-3PM
Instructor: Johee Kim
This one-day workshop will demonstrate the chine colle technique that will promise consistent results every time. Chine collé roughly translates to "tissue glued," and it traditionally refers to printing an inked intaglio plate and mounting a shaped sheet of paper onto a backing sheet at the same time. As this process was originally used with Eastern papers, this workshop will explore utilizing Gampi and Kozo fiber printmaking papers onto traditional Western papers. As the fiber structure of many Eastern papers offers a more delicate surface, Gampi and Kozo can capture finer details from an intaglio plate. Chine collé enables a printer to then mount these lightweight papers onto heavier weight cotton-based sheets. When using two colors of paper, subtle and beautiful results can occur!!
This highly technical, detail-orientated process has its secrets, which will be disclosed. Preparing your own wheat starch paste will be covered along with basic printing strategies. It will be easy, clean and fun! While not mandatory, students are encouraged to bring their own etching plates to be used during class. Previous etching/printing experience suggested.
